2014 Pumpkin Beer of the Year: Ten Ninety De Ogen

Ten Ninety De Ogen
8.4% ABV Pumpkin Saison

Appearance: A hazy orange with golden leanings and a huge, fluffy head of lightweight, off white foam (very saison-like in this respect).

Aroma: Vanilla extract / Nutmeg / Cinnamon / Earthy

Mouthfeel: Dry spices, but smooth

Taste: Orangey citrus / Grassy / Funky / Cinnamon / Nutmeg / Clove / Vanilla bean

De Oden

This began to drink as a saison and finished with a pumpkin pie aroma so powerful that it became a flavor, all in one sip. The pie spices were so effortlessly blended into the saison style that they flowed into one another seamlessly. As I continued to drink the beer, a very slight dry cinnamon feeling did build up on my tongue, but not in an annoying or unpleasant way.

This beer was beautifully balanced and absolutely wins “Pumpkin Beer of the Year” award, in my book. In the past I have liked Schlafly Pumpkin Ale (2013) and Southern Tier’s Pumpking (2012) the best.

This year I also tried (in order preferred):
Whole Hog Pumpkin–Stevens Point
Pumpking–Southern Tier
Imperial Pumpkin–O’Fallon
Pumpkin Ale–Schlafly
Brandy Barrel-Aged Imperial Pumpkin Ale–Lakefront
Pump(KY)n–Avery Brewing Company
Gourd Damn–Slapshot Brewing

Arguably, I could have judged the two barrel-aged styles on the list (Lakefront and Avery) in a separate category, but … well… I didn’t. Both were really phenomenal, but I think they’ll be truly amazing in about a year or so when the alcohol burn has mellowed a tad–they were a little hot ‘n’ boozey.

What were your some of your favorite pumpkin beers this year? Cheers, and Happy Halloween!
